RE: 1 yr old Rockwood leaking, won't cover under active warranty

I have an issue with my 14 month old Rockwood 29' TT leaking in two places. Despite being under a two year warranty, Forest River won't cover it. The dealer re-caulked it but will not pull the window and re-seal it properly unless someone pays them. Forest River states since it is leaking from a caulk seam and re-caulking is my job it is not covered. Apparently the manual states that I should have been re-caulking all caulk every 6 months.
I plan on fixing it myself. I just thought I would share my pain.
Mark
While I kind of feel for you. I do agree that your trailer should be inspected and re-caulked on a regular basis and that is the owners responsibility. If that has not been done in the time you have owned the trailer it is overdue.
Fortunately resealing a window is really not that big of deal.... especially if you are already a homeowner.
One other caveat you might want to read up on is the 2-year warranty on your refriderator that is only good for one year if you fail to have proof that the annual service was not performed.
Best bet is to get familiar with your trailer by learning to do some of these things yourself.

RE: Chevy 5.3l Change 3.73 Rear End to 4.11 ???

Thanks all for the responses. Lots of good insight into the issue.
dodge guy gets it. I don't like the way it hunts down to 2nd on a slight grade.
I use Tow Mode, have curtailed CC and run 3rd to gain control, but that won't stop the downshift to 2nd. Running at higher RPM in 3rd will limit the need to drop to 2nd in the 55-60 MPH range.
I am already the slowest guy on the road at 55 and I like a comfortable ride. I don't accept slowing to 45-50 in 2nd is the way to enjoy the open road.
I just completed 4,000 miles in the last month. I was a rookie, but have advanced a grade.
I am curious of a couple comments...
Howl? Is the gear change technically difficult that requires a top technician to do it right? I do need to hire someone to do the work. If I traded the power band issue for a chronic howl, I would be bummed.
I appreciate all the inputs.
A gear swap isn't technically difficult, but shimming it and getting the lash adjusted is not necessarily for a first timer either. I'd really condsider what the guy above suggested which would be looking for a salvage complete rear end with the gears already installed. That is a simple do it yourself and a no brainer if you want to go back. Probably your cheapest route as well. IF your talking about a 4x4 it does start to become cost prohibitive.

RE: New member + TV question

The Jayco 30U is too much trailer no matter how you want to slice it up.
Your TW will end up in the 1100-1200lb range and once loaded you will be close to 8000lbs.
You need to look at trailers with a dry weight in the 5K range and 22-25' in length otherwise you need to consider a more capable TV.

RE: Slideout awning had water pool on it

why have a awning if you have to put things on top of the slide?
If you look closely at the picture above yours you will see all the leaves and garbage that accumulate on the roof of the slide. The awning keeps this stuff off of the roof of the slide so that when you retract it doesn't ruin the seals.

RE: Arctic Fox 26Z2/Any Problem Towing With My 2007 GMC 1500?

Well I was at the AF dealer when one of the new Toyotas(the one the yo owners like to call a 3/4 ton but isn't) hooked up to one... He was back the next day saying it wasn't enough truck. So he traded the truck for a diesel and ended up getting a 29V instead.
AF's are heavy especially in the tounge once you add water, propane and loaded down. They are darn nice trailers but my opinion is it's too much trailer for a half ton truck, especially for towing in our state.
With that said, there are some real deals right now around here for the Foxes and a capable truck can be had for a song as well.... I have no regrets purchsing my 30U nor the 1ton to pull it and would do so again simply for the quality of the trailer compared to others we have owned.
edit...
After looking at your truck again. Find out what rear axle ratio you have and you may be OK. The dealer I bought from was willing to hook up the trailer for the yota guy and let him do a test pull with the truck.... maybe yours will do the same for you.

RE: Length of TT compared to TV

But how can this "ratio" apply when there is a maximum wheel base for all TVs? How can you have an SUV and an 18ft trailer and then say that you need a 1 ton dually to tow a 45ft fifth wheel?
Is the dually's wheel base 2.2 times longer than that of the SUV? I don't think so. I think some of this needs to be debunked.
There is much more to the equation than just wheelbase. In the example you stated above the pin weights are going to be significantly differnt thus needing a dually or more to tow the fifth wheel.

RE: Length of TT compared to TV

No one has ever been able to convince me that this `ratio thing' makes any sense. What does make sense is the wheelbase of the tow vehicle and the WEIGHT of the trailer.
Why, other than making turns, is a 40 ft. trailer weighing 10,000 lbs harder to tow than a 20 ft. trailer weighing 10,000 lbs.?
The surface area of the sides in a crosswind are exponentialy different.

RE: Black Water Tank Backup???

We were in the Park Office yesterday and a lady came in looking for a carpet cleaner. Seems her black water tank overflowed and soaked the carpet and etc. There was an additional problem as the carpet cleaner wouldn't touch the job because it was an environmental hazard.
In thinking about this, I can not figure out how BW tank can overflow into the living space. Has anyone else heard of this happening?
The most common cause is a leaky seal on the toiltet or the pedal not stopping water flow when done flushing.... combined with the black valve not being open. When we leave camp I tend to make sure all the water is turned off to avoid this happening.
Another one I witnessed last weekend was caused by a owner hooking his city water hose to his tank cleaner instead of the city water inlet. He turned on the water supply and left for the day.... once we saw water running out the front door of his trailer someone went over and turned off the water supply. He had mistakenly hooked up to the wrong inlet... Fortunately his tank was relatively clean and for the most part empty so it was a matter of drying everything out and cleanup. His wife said it wasn't the first time either.

RE: 2008 Arctic Fox 26Z..Debating On Buying..Thoughts?

Arctic Fox / Northwood has been great. Make sure you check the weights as they are heavy. They are made for boondocking/offroad camping and as such are built sturdy to handle it... but again they are heavy. I would buy another in a heart beat.
Mine has had a couple of small issues as has every trailer I owned however Northwood and my dealer has always handled the issues swiftly.
Check the afnash.com forum as well. Complaints are far and few between.

RE: If money were no object... Which TT would you buy?

Another happy Arctic Fox (30U) owner that would buy another. While we did not have unlimited funds... $ was not the reason we purchased the northwood. Quality construction, strong factory/dealer support and a high customer satisfaction index were. While not as large as the Airstream owners group you will find a similar brand loyalty with the Northwood community. Not a "perfect" trailer by any means but the willingness of Northwood to quickly remedy issues has held true with my experience.

RE: camping in bear country

All you have to do is throw your table scraps under your neighbors trailer, they wont bother you. .
When I used to surf the Hilo break by the steel bridge there used to be a few hammerheads around once in a while. My buddy used to always carry a knife with him. He always joked that the knife was to stab the closest guy to him if the sharks showed up.... the funny thing was is I think he was serious.

RE: Pilot Light in Oven Not Staying Lit-Question

After you pull off the knob for the oven control. Look and see if there is a little hole that was covered by the knob to the right or left of the brass shaft. If there is there is a set screw there that is the gas adjustment for the pilot light for the oven. Open it up a half turn and see if that doesn't help keep the pilot lit. A little more gas to the pilot will heat the thermocouple a little more. That's what mine took to get it adjusted to keep it lit.
Hope this helps

Maybe we could start a thread for all the people that haven't had problems with their WWs. It might give me some peace of mind. I'm getting worried that I have a giant elephant on my back.
YOu and 767guy could have your own thread....

RE: Can I tow a 2008 Cougar Lite 29 foot trailer

Let us know when you schedule your tranny replacement.... that was my experience with towing with an expy at the weights your looking at. Lots of mountains and it just didn't hold up.
Check your fluid often and replace on a heavy duty schedule and consider getting a aftermarket cooler and watch the temps.

RE: Traveling with the Dog

My question to those who wrote that it is unsafe is, how is it any less safe than, say, for horses in a horse trailer. I am assuming like the original poster that the dogs would be secured in their kennels in the trailer and the windows are open.
Well, in a horse trailer it is much more open. While you have windows in a TT, they aren't as many and do not provide as much ventilation. Plus, technically, some of those windows (most in fact) are not supposed to be opened durning travel (according to the manufacturer's)
Specifically which windows and what manufacturers.... sounds like a load of BS to support a position.

RE: Has anyone tried one of the water to hydrogen products

we have been playing with HHO gas production at work. using stainless steel plates the size of playing cards and 12 volts at 10-20 amps. seem to generate about a liter of gas per minute. When we first tried it we attempted to to light the gas emiting from an end of a 4 foot section of suction hose. It lit alright, it flashed back into the water container and blew the lid off of it. If you apply electricity to a series of plates submerged in water you will produce a hydrogen oxygen combination gas that burns very well. thats the easy part, knowing where to plug it in on your engine and how to regulate production, and safety systems that is the tough part and we are still working on that. we are doing this for our own benefit, not to sell and we have been using internet sources so far. please don't apply snake oil comments to everything you don't understand
So you must be a State employee then?
